Britain's Astute-class submarines raised Royal Navy undersea warfare capability standards. These nuclear-powered boats have some of the most advanced sonar sensors ever used, able to track ships departing New York Harbour while the submarine stays underactive close to the English Channel. The submarine's nuclear reactor has almost limitless range since it never requires refuelling over its 25-year running life. Although its advanced battle management system allows exact target tracking and engagement in challenging operational environments, the Astute-class carries a strong arsenal of Spearfish torpedoes and Tomahawk land-attack missiles. Among the stealthiest submarines ever constructed, the vessel's unusual hull form and acoustic-deadening tiles help to explain why.
