The height of conventional submarine technology is embodied in Japan's Soryu-class boats. These diesel-electric boats use air-independent propulsion (AIP) systems to enable weeks of continuous submergence. While its fighting system combines some of the most complex Japanese electronics, the submarine's revolutionary X-shaped stern form offers great manoeuvrability. The vessel's innovative acoustic tiles offer great stealth capabilities and its snorkel system has a special head valve design that reduces detection when running on diesel power. Equipped with Type 89 torpedoes and Harpoon anti-ship missiles, the Soryu-class offers a serious danger to any possible enemy.
