Designed during World War I, the Liberty L-12 signified a radical change in aircraft engine architecture. Standard parts for mass manufacture and an amazing 400 horsepower from this 12-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine Its aluminium structure kept weight to a minimum, while its modular design let for quick manufacture and simple maintenance. Military aircraft would find the engine perfect because of its dependability and power-to---weight ratio; its impact went much beyond the war years. Modern engine building techniques still draw on the design ideas of standardisation and modularity seen in the Liberty L-12.
