Behind the Steel Doors: A Worldwide Prison Cell Tour

Norway's Bast Prison

Overview of Bastøy Prison in Norway Bastøy Prison, located on an island in Norway, houses a diverse group of inmates, including murderers, rapists, drug traffickers, and con artists. Despite the serious nature of their crimes, there is a notable demand among Norwegian prisoners to be transferred to Bastøy, reflecting its reputation as a progressive correctional facility. The prison focuses on rehabilitation through meaningful work, allowing inmates to engage with domestic animals on the farm and in the surrounding forests.

At Bastøy, all staff members are unarmed, promoting a non-violent atmosphere that fosters trust and cooperation between inmates and guards. This unique approach to incarceration emphasizes rehabilitation rather than punishment, aiming to prepare inmates for successful reintegration into society. Since the prison opened 11 years ago, only five inmates have escaped. Remarkably, three of them voluntarily returned, while the other two were apprehended and subsequently sent to prisons on the mainland.
