The Current State of Geishas in Japan
Today, there are only about a thousand geishas remaining in Japan, a stark contrast to their historical numbers. These talented artisans primarily reside and work in two major cities: Tokyo and Kyoto. In these vibrant cultural hubs, geishas continue to uphold their traditions, captivating audiences with their performances and maintaining the rich heritage of their craft.
In Kyoto, the geisha culture is particularly celebrated, with many geishas residing in the historic districts known as hanamachi. Here, they engage in traditional arts, including music, dance, and tea ceremonies, while also adapting to modern influences. Tokyo, on the other hand, offers a more contemporary setting where geishas blend traditional practices with modern entertainment.
