13. Ancient Roman Coins Found in Japanese Castle Ruins

Ancient Ottoman and Roman coins were discovered at Okinawa, Japan's Katsuren Castle, an old imperial structure. Ten of these antiquated coins were discovered in the southern prefecture of Japan. Toshio Tsukamoto, a researcher from Ganoji, discovered the coins among the ruins.

Even though Kasturen's dig got underway in 2013, the coins weren't found until 2016. Chinese coins and ceramics were among the other objects discovered; they were obtained through trade with China. Regarding the Roman and Ottoman coins, archaeologists are perplexed as to how those made their way into a castle like one in southern Japan, like Kasturen.
